MLK~Martin Luther King Jr…..
My Dad and I visited the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in ATL., Georgia and it was a very interesting time. Marin Luther, was named after the great reformer Martin Luther, a german theologian, who brought us the reformation and the protestant movement.
I have been reading up on non-violent protest especially as it relates to Jesus Christ and how he dealt with violence in his message, the Gospel. ( check out Gregory Boyd’s post on this topic. ) So it was interesting to be part of the experience of visiting and remembering, a man who stood for non-violent protest and who succeeded, ( his birthday is celebrated in the US today and blacks have more freedoms than pre-MLK) but not without sacrifice, His own life.
Again we can achieve anything in life we want once we are willing to sacrifice everything for it. Martin Luther King ( quite sadly so), gave up his life for the freedom of blacks in the US and probadly, in many other parts of the world as well.
Here are a few famous quotes made by MLK:
“….anyone can be great…as long as they are willing to serve…”
“The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.”
“Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into friend.”
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?‘
Martin Luther King Jr. was influenced alot by Mahatma Gandhi, a major and spiritual leader of India, who also encouraged non-violence as a means of embodying his message.
Martin Luther Kings’ and Ghandi’s struggles against social injustice, peace and racial equality for all, on our planet, embodied the message of our saviour Jesus Christ. Oh if only there were more of these men of integrity and character in our times, more warrior poets!.
As you would remember I did a short post on Martin Luther King just before coming up here, to Georgia. You can check it out by just clicking here.
